Business Start-Up

This project addresses the problem of poverty particularly as it relates to high unemployment levels in Kenya, by training suitably selected people from a particular community to start their own viable business in their community.

Dynamic Business Start-Up Program (DBSP) trains and helps empower the poor by offering training in practical business start-up skills so that they are enabled to establish or improve their own viable income- generating business.

The problems of poverty and economic hopelessness are currently most evident among Kenya’s youth. This became evident during the post-election violence of January 2008 and remains a problem. Even with reasonable education levels, the lack of opportunities and lack of direction continue to demoralize youth. This places Kenya’s youth in a position of ongoing vulnerability that has the potential to destabilize the nation as a whole.

By the end of each unique course, each trainee will have learned and adopted basic business skills and be involved in a money-making activity that they have personally chosen, using the $10 that each participant raises and contributes as their seed capital. The project consists of a business training program targeting the poor and unemployed. It will be run by two of our qualified DBSP trainers who will carefully select twenty people from the community and conduct a one- month business training course in the area where the participants actually live. Alternate days will be spent in the classroom and the market- place where lessons learned will be practically applied and relevant research undertaken.

The one month intensive training will be followed by each participant being personally followed up at regular intervals at his/her business by a trainer over the course of the subsequent year. In addition to this, each trainee will participate in a financial understanding exercise three months after the completion of the course to further assist with the application and adoption of the learned skills. Each participant will do the necessary research, write their own business plan, and start an income- generating activity, thereby attaining and applying the necessary skills to run their own business as well as gaining confidence.
