How Can I Give?

Empowering Lives Orphanage (ELO) seeks support from both local and international communities. This includes financial support and donations-in-kind. Since it is a non-profit project, we pray that other organizations, churches, and individual well wishers, both locally and abroad, will generously support by giving to and serving in the home. The home has also secured land to grow some of its own food, increasing efforts towards self-sustainability.

Most of the construction and expansion projects for the orphanage are funded by individual donors and churches. If you are interested in finding out about the current needs for special projects, please send an email to info@empoweringlives.org.

The chief strategy for generating income for operational expenses is through child sponsorship. We seek to be able to operate the home on a budget of $90 per month per child. We understand that not everyone can afford to sponsor a child for $90, so we also offer sponsorships of $30 per month, allowing for three people to be sponsoring one child.

The following will give you more information about sponsoring a child:

What Does My Sponsorship Pay For?

You may be wondering what $90 per month is paying for, especially since other sponsorship programs require only about $30 per month. Those programs are usually supporting children that are still living at home, providing them with one meal a day, a school uniform, and an education. At Empowering Lives Orphanage, your dollars go to empowering orphans with the following:

  1. A Family – Our goal is to do the best that we can to replace the families that have been taken from these children. Each child will live in a family unit of up to 24 children with a married couple as a mother and father and an additional assistant that will be an “auntie”. Our aim is to make each child feel special, safe, and wanted.
  2. A Home – Children at ELO live in a house with up to 12 children (boys and girls are separate). Each child has his or her own bed as well as a shelf and a drawer to keep their belongings. There is also a large table for the children to use for their studies.
  3. An Education – Each child will receive a Christian education. Your sponsorship will pay for their school fees, school uniform, and supplies. Our goal is for the children to continue their education through university or vocational school. At home, they will also be learning cooking, housekeeping, farming, and social skills.
  4. Food and Clothing – Most of the children come to ELO with no more than the clothes on their back and often without shoes. Some are also malnourished. Your support will provide clothes, shoes, and 3 nutritional meals a day.
  5. Health – The children are given medical checkups regularly. In addition, they are taught about personal hygiene, healthy living, and will participate in sports and physical activity on a daily basis.
  6. Administrative Support – The care of the children can only be as good as the staff caring for them. We strive to hire staff with strong Christian character and superior training and experience. Administrative costs include the areas of kitchen, security, campus maintenance, and office support. Our goal is to keep these costs to a minimum in order to be the best stewards of the finances God provides.

Can I Correspond With My Child?

Yes! From the child’s point of view, the most important aspects of sponsorship are your prayers and letters. It would mean a great deal to your child to receive regular correspondence from you, perhaps two or three times a year. Your child will respond to any letter you send to them. Please know that if you are partially sponsoring a child at $30 per month, your child will have more than one sponsor and will therefore have more correspondence to write.

We ask that you not send gifts to your child as we try to maintain equality among the children. You may send an extra gift of cash for the child’s birthday or for Christmas and an appropriate gift will be bought for them.

How Do I Make My Sponsorship Payments?

You may make your sponsorship payments monthly, quarterly, or yearly using check, cash or money order. At this time we do not have the capability to take payments by credit card. However, it is possible to have checks sent automatically through your bank by setting up an automatic bill pay online or at your specific branch. We recommend this option as it is much easier for you to keep your payments up to date.
