Running for Congo 2007

Have you ever run for your life?
We are running for the lives of needy children in the war torn area of Eastern Congo, Africa, and we need your help!
Although it’s a vast country with immense economic resources, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has been at the center of a devastating conflict. War has claimed an estimated 3 million lives by way of violence, disease, and malnutrition.
After the success of DR Congo’s first democratic election, life is finally making a turn for the better. About five years ago, ELI established the Empowering Lives Christian Academy, located in the Keredi slum in the city of Bukavu. Over 500 children now attend the school; this is their first chance at an education, as they have been unable to afford public school fees.
The ELI Christian Academy, however, has two present challenges. HEALTH: As there is no healthcare available in the immediate area, sick children often go untreated, spreading viruses and infections to fellow classmates. “In a community of 500 people where there is no doctor,” reports Mudekereza, ELI’s Congo Director, “I no longer feel safe.”
SPACE: The second challenge involves the growing number of students. Our facilities have become too small. Classes for 1st – 6th graders meet in the morning and middle school students take their turn in the afternoon.
With your help, we can impact a community for years to come. We have the opportunity to purchase a plot of land next to the school where we can build three more classrooms and begin a pharmacy/medical clinic/AIDS awareness center.
$8,000 is needed to purchase this valuable land. To help us meet our goal, several people that believe wholeheartedly in this important work are running marathons and inviting friends like you to join in this journey by supporting their runs. This is a run for their lives! Will you prayerfully consider helping to bring education and healthcare to Congolese children?
