Tanzania
Tanzania may have been spared the internal strife that has blighted many African states it still remains one of the poorest countries in the World and still hosts more than a half a million refugees, more than any other African nation. It’s potential wealth contrasted with its actual poverty, Tanzania has few exportable minerals and a primitive agricultural system. The economy depends heavily on agriculture, which accounts for more than one fourth of GDP, provides 85% of exports, and employs 80% of the work force. ELI’s origins started in Tanzania in 1994, along the shoreline of Lake Victoria, focusing on small-scale farmers.
Today, it is home to a dynamic program reaching and training thousands of farmers. Because of the unique strategy of the program and the dedication of the ELI national staff, we are able to change the course of needy people with strategic knowledge for less than $15 per family.
